Learning Activities: March 3, 2008

1. Students were assigned systems as they entered the room ranging from the digestive system, an irrigation system and the ecosystem. In their system group, students brainstormed what it means to be part of a system and what makes a system efficient or not.
2. We defined systems as a group, looking at them in the "input", "output" and "waste" model.
3. Read and discussed Zeri fable "Can Apples Fly?" What is the importance of systems thinking as we strive to achieve sustainability?
4. Students built their sustainable journals, finding recycled paper around the school to use as journal pages.
5. "No man is an island" - John Donne quote and discussion. What makes up the ocean that influences and surrounds your island?
6. Set up Intersession Blogs!
7. Transform class into burrito building system. Our strengths: teamwork, conservation of grated cheese and beans so that all students get some, division of labor, great clean-up! What were our wastes? Paper towels, a little lettuce and tomato, paper plates... how could we have made an even more efficient system with less waste?
8. Catalina Island map challenge in groups of four: landmarks, Channel Island map, coastline, Avalon map and topographic (homemade playdough map).
9. Rootbeer Float Fund-raiser after school!

Homework: Share trip info with your family. Work on improving your personal contribution to a system you are a part of. Bring tents, tomorrow!
